Recap of Tuesday, June 8, 1999, BOCC Meeting



Due to time constraints, several items from the June 2, 1999, BOCC Agenda were continued until the Land Use Meeting on Tuesday, June 8, 1999. Action taken by the Board and staff assignments are as follows:

V-F-1a The Board approved a budget amendment for appropriation in the amount of $183,200 to provide funding for telecommunication and other operating expenses for the remainder of FY99 for the State Attorney's Office.

VI-1 Commissioners presented reports regarding various boards and councils on which they serve, as follows:

Commissioner Platt reported that the Council of Governments is considering a signage project. It is proposed that a sign be created and posted at various governmental sites whenever there is joint participation by more than one governmental entity. This matter was referred to staff to determine the feasibility of the signage project. Edith Stewart, the staff liaison to COG, will review and coordinate with appropriate departments and schedule a report on the BOCC Agenda for July 22.

Commissioner Hart reported on his involvement with the Muslim Alliance in assisting the Kosovo refugees. He distributed handouts on the Alliance's programs. Also, Commissioner Hart distributed the 1999 Hurricane Guide.

Commissioner Norman reported on the Tampa Bay Sports Commission's contribution of $25,000 that will be distributed Countywide for kids involved in sports activities.

VI-2a The Board appointed Remy Ogunbamwo-Moore to the Health Council for West Central Florida, Inc.

VI-3a The Board received a letter from Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman requesting designation of an elected official for the Florida Association of Counties' Urban Caucus, which will meet in Orlando on June 24. Commissioner Scott was designated as Hillsborough County's representative. Lelia Blevins has prepared an acknowledgment letter for the Chairman's signature advising of the Board's representative to the Urban Caucus.

VI-3b The Board received a letter from Manatee County Commissioner Joe McClash regarding air pollution in the Tampa Bay area. The Board referred this matter to the Environmental Protection Commission for coordination. Lelia Blevins has prepared an acknowledgment letter for the Chairman's signature to Commissioner McClash.

VI-4 Commissioner Hart led a discussion regarding seeking an Attorney General's opinion relating to any BOCC obligation for funding of the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission. The Board approved Commissioner Hart's recommendation to go forward with this item. Emeline Acton will prepare a letter for the Chairman's signature to the Attorney General by June 18.

VI-5 Commissioner Platt led a discussion regarding an ordinance or policy addressing violence in the workplace. She mentioned that Pinellas and Sarasota Counties have such a policy that provides for a hearing officer. The Board passed a motion to have the County Attorney's Office and the Human Resources Department draft both an ordinance and a BOCC policy for consideration by the Board on July 22. Emeline Acton and Sharon Wall will prepare an ordinance and BOCC policy for consideration on July 22.

VI-7 Commissioner Hart provided an update on office space in the Brandon area for MacDill Air Force Base personnel. No action was required.

Additional Item:

An unscheduled item was presented by Commissioner Hart regarding appointments to the Committee of 99. He felt that representation should be expanded in different areas than what the Board approved at the June 2 meeting. However, no formal action was taken by the Board.
